Name:Glerarkirkja
Country:Iceland
Short profile:Glerarkirkja is a congregation within the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Iceland, which is the national church in Iceland and a member church of the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) and the World Council of Churches (WCC).
As a part of our local community we wish to participate in and further community service and social awareness of all of our members. Our emphasis has been on youth work and work with the elderly. Our goals are, amongst others, to promote participation of young people in decision-making and project building; to cultivate a sense of responsibility of young people to go forward and meet his/her fellow human beings; to cultivate an understanding of each individual's uniqueness and worth.
We take great pride in our children's- and youth programme. Our activities include weekly meetings of children, young people, young families, lectures and workshops, music education, choir rehearsals, school visits, activities with the elderly, visitation and occasional field trips. We participate in social projects in wide terms within our community and host meetings, conferences and other activities.
Glerárkirkja is a member within a local youth organisation of the church and through that organisation the youth work of Glerarkirkja is also a member of EYCE, The ecumenical youth council in Europe.
Glerarkirkja is one of two Lutheran parishes covering the rural town Akureyri in Iceland. The congregation of approx. 7.000 inhabits spans relative poverty to affluence, small business to midsize enterprises, nine kindergartens, and three elementary schools. One fourth of the congregation are younger than 20 years.
Akureyri has 17.500 inhabitants and is the largest town outside of the urban area of Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland ( with more than 75% of the whole population in Iceland). The inhabitants of Akureyri do generally not enjoy the relatively high standard of living as in Reykjavik. Akureyri is a typical town on the country side where fish, cows and sheep's still play a role in the economy although Akureyri has in the last two decades made clear steps towards a more variety of potential occupation and income. Akureyri is 400 km away from Reykjavik, which can be reach by bus or airplane. From the airport in Akureyri there are occasionally long distance flights to mainland of Europe but usually the inhabitants have to fly first to Reykjavik to get abroad.
