Short profile:ROJM or Regionaal Open Jeugdcentrum Mechelen is a youth house working with socially-economic deprived youngsters in Mechelen and Willebroek and also acknowledged as such by the Flemish Ministry for Youth. The main group of youngsters they are dealing with are from Maghreb origin, but the centre wants to be open to all youngsters and as such promote the cultural diversity in the city. The centre was established 28 years ago by youth from Moroccan origin, living in Mechelen. Only recently the name changed from Rzoezie to ROJM to put emphasis on the open and regional character of the organisation. The main entry point for working with the target group is leisure time: from here, the youth workers (in general recruited from within the target group) also work on other issues, such as employment (with support from a.o. the ESF). There also separate activities for girls. The organisation has gone through some difficult years, more in particular the relations with the city council have been very tense over the last year. With a new name the organisation wants to pave the way for a new image in the city. In this case, we will focus on the youth work; offering leisure activities to groups of youngsters is one of the main activities of ROJM and on the experience of ROJM with volunteers and group exchanges.
