Name:Martin Murtagh
Country:United Kingdom
Short profile:The Magnet Centre was established in 1990 and officially opened in 1993 to provide suitable provision for young people aged 15-25 from the Newry and surrounding areas of South Down and South Armagh (Northern Ireland).

The Magnet has developed a unique participation structure over the lifetime of the organization. The uniqueness is that young people aged 16 -- 25 manage the center. The recruitment of these young people comes from user groups with Magnet. Each user group elects a representative to sit on the management committee, which make all the decisions in relation to overall running of the organization. This has made Magnet a beacon of good practice in terms of participation throughout Ireland and the UK.

There is a good range of learning experiences for members within Magnet. We offer programmes in areas such as the arts group, the positive health group and the music and media group. In addition to increasing their knowledge in the various areas the young people who attend these groups develop personal skills including participating actively in discussions and assisting in leading groups.

We are presently developing work with young men aged 14-21, particularly those with low socio-economic status, are experiencing dispossession of roles, lack of positive reinforcement and ultimately loss of hope for the future. Because of this, many of these young males are now becoming victims of trying to maintain credibility with their peers around notions of masculinity and as a result get into difficulties (anti social behaviour, joy riding, drugs and alcohol abuse and joining gangs).

We feel as a society there aren't many institutions or rituals that cultivate young men to becoming positive role models. We aim to address this cycle, and deliver quality programmes to males, rather than added to existing programmes for females. We will achieve this by increasing younger males critical capacity. That through the work we do they will feel they've more choices in how they lead their lives and that they do not have to behave in a stereotypical male way. That may mean not getting involved in anti social behaviour or conflict or it may mean they feel more able to express themselves when they are with their family and friends.

We are keen to link with groups in the E.U, and USA who also work with young men (offering young people opportunities to develop in a wider social context).
