| Short profile: | Riga Purvciems Secondary School is more than 20 years old. It was founded in 1988 as Riga Secondary School No.24. In 1991 it became Purvciems Gymnasium. It was renamed once again and got its present name in 2001.
In 1994 the Ministry of Education of Latvia gave the school the status of school specializing on foreign languages. Thus, English is taught from Year 1, German or French – from Year 5. Two subjects are also taught in English: Business English and Literature of Britain, the USA and Australia.
The school offers three educational programs: humanitarian, general educational and sciences. There are also wide possibilities for students to enlarge their outlook in various subjects taught at school.
The school houses studies, laboratories which are equipped with modern computers and other equipment. There are lots of modern teaching materials and visual aids in studies. A modern football pitch a spacious gym, dancing halls and a library can be used by students to their advantage.
The school is famous for its dancing collectives, choirs which perform not only in Latvia, but also abroad. The dancing collectives are regular contestants at numerous dancing competitions held abroad and are highly evaluated by the jury of these contests.
The school has a drama studio as well as its own puppet theatre where students can develop their talents. The school drawing studio is always busy with students who are keen on drawing and exhibitions are held to show the results of their work.
Those who are fond of tennis, football (socker), volleyball, martial arts can attend trainings at school.
A lot of attention is being paid to polish up teachers’ methods of teaching. The teachers use modern materials and up-to-date methods in their work. It all results in getting prizes at the state, Riga and district olympiads our students take part in. Every year our school leavers pass state exams successfully and more than 83% of them have got levels A, B and C over the last years.
More than 90% of our students continue their studies in higher educational establishments not only in Latvia, but abroad as well. They have no difficulties with English because they get a sound knowledge of it at school.
School out-of-class events are various and enjoy great popularity not only among the students, but also among their parents and relatives. Some of the traditional events are: Knowledge Day, School Self-Government Day, Song Festival, Christmas Concert, New Year celebrations , Last Bell and others. We are also running Subject Weeks which give students a unique opportunity to get extra information on different subjects. The events are held in different languages: Latvian, Russian, English, German and French.
All students of Forms 1-9 are involved in project work. Senior formers write scientific research papers. Already at school the students polish up their skills in presenting their projects and scientific research papers. We are proud to say that our students have got first and second places in District, Riga and State Olympiads of Scientific Research Papers.
Special attention is paid to our foreign projects in the frames of Comenius and Norplus . Riga Purvciems Secondary School was one of the first in the republic to launch Comenius projects. The school has long-term ties with schools from Spain, Germany, Madeira, Denmark, Great Britain.
