Short profile:The Discovery of Talents was established in June 2006 and is an unincorporated association. The organisation was created by a group of young asylum seekers in Birmingham, who had experienced a lack of support and information on life in the UK.
These individuals created the organisation in order to improve the life of other asylum seekers and refugees living in Birmingham and Sandwell. All the members of our management committee came to UK as asylum seekers.
We are based in a community centre in Ladywood in Birmingham. Our services are open to all asylum seekers and refugees across the city. However, we find that the majority of our users are from French speaking African Countries .We have recently had an increase in the number of Zimbabwean , Somalian, Eritrean refugees using our service. Most of our users live in inner city Birmingham and Sandwell.
We provide the following services:
· Employment support: CV advice, jobs search, filling job application, job coaching, sign-posting to relevant agencies, e.g. Job Centre Plus
· Advice and Guidance: welfare, benefit, housing, consumer right, debt management, immigration advice and sign-posting to educational and training opportunities.
· Youth activities: mentoring, confidence building, youth forum, recreational and educational activities
· Allotment project
· Family mediation
· Antisocial behaviour
· Domestic violence
