Short profile:National College “Mihail Sadoveanu” is situated in Pascani (Iasi County) a small town in the North-East of Romania. Our high school has 1128 students, in 40 classes with specializations in computer science, languages, science, social studies. Our students are aged between 11- 19 and come from Pascani and from the surrounding areas. Pascani is a small town, with low economic activity. It used to be an industrial center before 1989, but in the period after 1990, due to the general decline in economy, most of the factories and plants were shut down, leading to a high unemployment rate. Therefore most of our students’ families have limited financial possibilities. However, it is a town with a rich cultural life and with citizens who are truly interested in their children’s education. Therefore one of the priorities of the school is organizing educational activities, attractive and interesting programmes, in an interdisciplinary and multilingual vision. These activities are designed to motivate students, so that they could develop personally and socially and to enable inclusive education for disadvantaged groups. \\\\\\\\r\\\\\\\\nMany children face different social problems among which the most important are poverty and the absence of their parents who work abroad. This worrying phenomenon not only deprives our students from a proper parental guidance, but also contributes to narrowing their horizon for the future. Most of them fail in having a long-term perspective and decide to go and work abroad immediately after graduating high-school, thus limiting their chances to self-accomplishment. Another challenging issue is that some of our students are of Rroma origin and therefore have to face different forms of discrimination and find motivation to study. Our high school’s managerial agenda includes some measures meant to improve our students’ situation as far as social, family or communication problems are concerned. We have also established a Parents Association, which takes part in our educational projects and helps in our attempt to counsel the parents and to offer them solutions for improving their communication with their children. A large number of our students are represented by children who live in the surrounding villages and who have limited financial possibilities, their parents being farmers who work the land in less-favored areas. These students show interest in learning but sometimes they have bad marks because of their families’ situation. Although we have not faced school abandonment, absenteeism is gradually increasing and we are trying to stop it by counseling both the students and their parents, also involving the local community in this process.
