Summary of the project:The project “Un sorriso per vivere, perché sorridere è un dovere sociale” (2009-IT-11) is a group EVS initiative coordinated by INCO Association, where international volunteers have the opportunity to collaborate in the activities of the “Azienda Servizi Sociali di Bolzano” (ASSB), in the city of Bolzano, Italy. The activity sector of the hosting organization where the volunteers will be involved is dedicated to elderly people.\r\nASSB hosts in total 4 EVS international volunteers per year, besides some others from the German Civil Service. The international volunteers support the entertainment sector of the nursing homes, assisting the social workers and trying to give a young smile and a feeling of internationality to the guests. \r\nSeen the very positive experiences we made in the previous years with other international volunteers, we are convinced that their presence contribute actively to enrich the elders’ quality of life at the nursing homes bringing new energy, motivation and new ideas to the host organization.\r\nThe duties of our volunteers will include mainly the participation and the organization of cultural and recreational activities (reading newspapers, listen to music, excursions to a concert, handicraft workshops, walking tours, game evenings, organization of birthday parties etc.), the participation in daily excursions (in the mountains, to a lake, nearby market, etc.) and the support of the elders in the organization of their daily live (make different kind of purchases, accompaniment to the canteen, etc.). \r\n\r\n
Special considerations:The project is open to everybody who has a special interest and sensibility to elderly people and could bring new energies and enthusiasm in order to improve the conditions of the guests in the nursing elder homes, contributing to maintain active their physical, mental, affective and attitudinal capacities. Once that the volunteers will be permanently in contact with the elders, they should be open-minded, available to listen to them, patient and they should have certain interest in interpersonal communication.\\r\\nThe ASSB is open to host volunteers with fewer opportunities (educational, social, economical, cultural, and geographical). Once that our activities are addressed to elderly people (which sometimes are in a delicate situation), we are unfortunately not prepared to host young people with other kinds of disadvantages besides those mentioned.\\r\\n\\r\\n
