Summary:
This training course will be held in Freita mountain (Serra da Freita, in portuguese) which lies in Arouca municipality (Arouca is a medieval town, located ca. 70km from Oporto) between July 1 and 10, 2011, with 14 to 16 participants from different countries. The purpose of the training is to learn specific and professional training methods and to develop the proper skills in order to be able to work with young people in a very specific field: Environmental Education.
In other words, the aim of this project is to work and develop news skills in youth project facilitators and youth project coordinators who are used to work with youth exchange programs and that are specifically involved with Environmental organizations (for example, an organization that is focused on the conservation of Nature and Biodiversity of the Forests).
Our target group is also people from the field of social sciences, like organizational psychology or human resources, that in their daily life work with young people and would like to increase their knowledge about environmental education and outdoor education.
Why Environmental Education through outdoor activities? Because the forest is part of our ecosystem and we believe that it is one of the key elements in the balance for a sustainable life. Therefore if young people learn how to love this heritage and learn by experience, they will be capable of increasing their participation as active citizens and simultaneously to be motivated persons moved by good principles and virtues.
2011 is the International Year of Forests and we want to contribute for a better and sustainable use of this magnificent natural heritage. Forests are formed by trees, shrubs, herbs and a large number of other beings (plants and animals). Forests, next only to deserts, occupy most of the landmasses of the surface of Earth. As a renewable resource, the forest not only contributes to the ecological balance of Earth, as it has been, over time, a fundamental element for human survival.
It will be underlined the role of young people in Environmental Education Through Outdoor Activities, including non-formal tools and methods on the following activities:
- Environmental Education using teambuilding activities and group dynamics;
- Theoretical inputs: principles and methods of outdoor education for Environmental issues;
- A 3-day experiential education program: expedition in Freita mountain based on orienteering, shelter building, sleeping in the outdoors, campfire, protecting the environment, etc.;
- "Planting a Tree" Challenge;
- Work groups to discuss good practices and experiences in each country;
- Visits to forest parks and to influent institutions in the field of Environmental protection (e.g. Geopark of Arouca: http://www.geoparquearouca.com);
- Fauna and flora watching;
- Theoretical inputs: outdoor experiential learning activities for young groups, focusing in Environmental Education, designed, delivered and debriefed by participants;
- Enviromental Therapy as a tool for a happier life.
