CALL FOR PARTNERS
in the framework of the Lifelong Learning Programme,
Grundtvig Learning Partnership
Associazione Genitori Scuola Di Donato of Rome is searching for partners for the project
“The Social Capital School”
Parents, the community and volunteering: a resource for all!
Deadline for expressions of interest: 21st January 2011
The Grundtvig programme focuses on the teaching and study needs of learners taking adult education and ‘alternative’ education courses, as well as the organisations delivering these services. It aims to help develop the adult education sector, as well as enable more people to undertake learning experiences, notably in other European countries.
Brief description of the idea
Within the framework of the European Year of Volunteering and the LLP Grundtvig sub-Programme geared to fostering adult learning, The Social Capital School (SCS) will be a European partnership project aiming to share the experience of local learning communities open to the outside world. This project will operate thanks to the cooperation and active volunteering of different subjects of civil society: parents, teachers, young people, cultural mediators, social workers, psychologists etc..., all working within an environment where the local school, with its spaces, engagement and management capacity, represents an educational pivot point for the community and its players in deprived areas.
The idea for the project stems from the experience of an important Parents’ association in Rome, the Associazione Genitori Scuola Di Donato, created in 2003. This association, connected to the Istituto Comprensivo Manin ( a k-14 comprehensive school) is based in one of the most multi-ethnic districts of Rome, the so called Esquilino/Piazza Vittorio area, a synonym of multiculturalism, but also the setting of great socio-cultural contradictions, contrasts and hardship, mirroring those of today’s society. The Association represents a new concept of widened family, where parents do not take care only of their own children, but they offer their time and competences to help other parents and adults in general, opening the school up to a greater relationship with the outside world and to hope for everyone's children, by using the social and civic spaces of the community to foster the multidisciplinary encounter of sport, creativity, training and culture, thus facilitating the integration of school-community-family life. Particular attention is paid to “problem children” and people on the fringes of society in this context.
In the project, experiences such as this will be shared and networked to promote the idea of “the social capital school” in other communities in the partnership which face similar challenges, as the idea of a school which opens itself up to the contribution of all the active players of the educational field (teachers, parents, grandparents, social workers etc...), thus favouring a new concept of non formal and informal training, of non profit cooperation, social inclusion, active citizenship, human and social growth.
In its 2-year lifetime, the project will have a strong awareness-raising and empowerment focus for the adults, senior citizens and young people involved, as they will reflect on and engage in planning and experiencing concrete daily practices as mentors and facilitators of community development for inclusion through what schools have to offer as well.
In a global context of deepening unemployment, economic crisis and lack of trust, but with the power provided through the social capital of human relationships in local contexts (parents-children; parents-teachers; young people-adults), this project will link the experiences of informal groups, associations and schools in Europe reflecting on the value of adult learning, training and volunteer work. We are looking for partners willing to engage in such a mutual learning experience with us.
